Product Managers and EngineersJust what do you first notice about any website you visit on the Internet? Surely your answer would range amongst the many facets of web design and development that the website would hold. Perhaps it is its layout that catches your eyes? The fancy graphic images and videos or audio files you can access? Or perhaps it is the simplicity of a website that grabs your attention? All these aspects and more are part of what is known as the GUI or graphic user interface. For webmasters and web designers to ensure the success of this GUI, a web test scorecard should then be primarily used.

GUI is primarily used and developed so as to give due control to users. In the case of web design and development, control would be in the form of the ease and convenience the users would have when the GUI responds to whatever commands they give. Thus, the first goal of any web testing scorecard would be in establishing premium quality of the website’s GUI. Moreover, the scorecard should be used to determine whether or not the GUI provided by a website is indeed what its users and visitors would like to get their hands on themselves, and this is done with the use of the relevant web technology we have streaming all over the arena right now.

The homepage is the primary landing page of any visitor and should then be given due attention. The main things to remember here are accessibility and navigability. Your homepage should give easy access to all of the web pages hidden in your website, no matter how far they are burrowed within, as well as make it easy for your users and visitors to navigate their way through all your links so that they can find the information they are looking for. A number of questions should then be asked when developing your scorecard for this. You need to ask yourself, just how do your visitors get to your homepage? Are your menus outlined in such a way that they provide easy navigation? How about the overall construction of your homepage? Does it encourage the dropping by of more visitors? Technically, if you are the web designer, you would certainly have biased answers to these questions because this is your work, after all. Having a scorecard answer those questions is the wise thing to do because through this, you are sure to have unbiased answers to begin with.

Make sure to have direct links to all of the pages embedded inside your website when you are still in the process of constructing it. The ideal GUI will have present all the links that enable searchers to go back to the homepage. Without these links, the visitors would be left stagnant on whatever page they find themselves in, and this is something no web designer would want for a website. Moreover, make sure to incorporate direct links to all of the other pages and sections found in your website.

Your web test scorecard can also be used in determining interface speed. Studies show that most visitors give about 10 seconds leeway time for all graphics and such to show up on the website. If your website is overly laden with graphics and they take more than 10 seconds to show up, you just might lose your visitors. Keeping all these and more in mind, you should realize by now the important role this scorecard plays in the success of your website.

What Is Web Content Creation

2009 March 31

Bortusk Leer - Top HatResearch shows that once a visitor clicks onto your website, they decide in approximately three seconds on whether they will stay put or go somewhere else. Your potential customers are “scanning” your site quickly for information they need and want, and if it is not there then, neither are they. In the offline world location, location, location is the ticket, whereas the online world, people are in search for information, information, information (also known as Content Creation).

The information that you provide on your website must aim to meet your potential customers needs/and wants. Fresh, new content is crucial to search engine rankings. There are numerous other factors that involve the search engines algorithms, but content remains a very important factor in the equation. Most importantly, your content should she be unique and well-written. This is one of the most vital aspects of one’s website, and warrant’s the time it will take you to create it.

So you are probably wondering what kinds of questions you should ask yourself, about what you should take into consideration when thinking about the content for you site…… Ask yourself…..

1. What does your potential customer want to find? Are you providing what they are looking for?

Simply put, they are looking for a solution to their problem. You must provide them with the answers to their questions. Step outside the box, and provide them with sample emails of questions you have received along with your reply’s versus, a FAQ page. Your goal is to keep them on your site as long as you can, and you must have good content in order for them to stick around.

2. Will you have to do research or will your content come easily to you?

You may be very knowledgeable about your product, and the content creation flows easily for you, or you may be delving into a field you don’t know much about, and it will require some research on your part. You will want to find as much information as possible to include on your site. The more fresh, new web content you have on your site, the more the search engines spiders will pick up on it, and visit you more often.

3. Will you need someone to write for you (ghost writer)? If so, do you know how to go about finding one, and are you financially prepared to handle the costs associated with finding a Good one?

Your online perception can make-or-break all of your online marketing efforts. If you are an expert in your field, but don’t know how to write, then guess what…….You need to hire someone to write your content. Several places that you can look are Scriptlance, eLance, and Rentacoder, just to name a few. Be sure that you get a good writer because you want unique, quality content, created just for your site.

If you feel that you are able to write your own content (that is great) be sure to have it proofread so that the errors that you accidentally over looked are caught. Find someone that can go through your content, and give you constructive criticism. Try not to take it personally ( I know it’s easier said than done), and look at it as money saved (those little changes may retain more visitors).

The bottom line is,  if you have good content creation on your site, your site will gain in popularity, you have an increased chance of receiving inbound links to your site, which will help your sites rankings. The name of the game is exposure and credibility. Now go create fresh, new content, and get tons of inbound links for your website.

Cascading Style Sheets in Layman’s Terms

2009 March 30
presented by Karen Scharf, Website Developer

by Jeremy Zoerman

Cascading Style Sheet TrablisaCSS refers to presentation instructions for a document written in a markup language such as HTML or XHTML. A well defined CSS driven structure adds a level of efficiency and greater ease in modifying the appearance of a website.

What if one could maintain his lawn in a CSS sense? Using a hand held device he enters height and color values, and instantly every blade of grass on the lawn is exactly the same height and color (wouldn’t that be nice). A scenario such as this might apply to the copy on a website. Changing the font size, color, name, etc. for every page in a site would undoubtedly be cumbersome. Defining a single CSS object from which all copy elements reference would allow for dramatic modifications to the appearance of all copy on all pages in a snap.

Consider maintaining landscape elements in a predictable cascading effect. One may want all bushes to be of equal width and height. However, they may want to define the color and petal size of the flowers produced based on the species of plant. In this scenario we would reference two CSS objects for each bush. The first is the same for each bush, doing all the trimming so that each plant is of equal width and height. The second is specific to each species, defining what the flowers will look like. This scenario might represent the layout of a web page. A general layout such as equal columns with equidistant spacing. However, the similarities may end there as we may want to implement some type of distinction between each column. Whether the distinction is a background graphic, borders, or some other attribute, those instructions may be provided by means of a subsequent reference that adds more specific detail to the individual columns.

The analogies mentioned should provide general understanding about CSS. One could certainly go into great depth regarding specific implementations and practices.
